Abstract

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a three-dimensional radiological technique that has made its mark on the world of dental radiology over the last two decades. Known as cone beam, CBCT overcomes the limitations of traditional
two-dimensional dental imaging. It provides a precise image of multiplanar details of maxillofacial bone structures and surrounding soft tissues.
In general, pulsed irradiation results in lower doses for the patient than continuous exposure, because the radiation is interrupted. Continuous exposure mode has the disadvantage of exposing the patient to higher doses during the image acquisition process. The principles of dose justification, optimisation and limitation have been adopted in diagnostic imaging to protect patients from unnecessary exposure.
This article aims to compile all the most recent dosimetric data published in the scientific literature. This work aims to determine the approximate dose of this technique and to make CBCT examination prescribers aware of radiological exposure within the framework of optimisation and the ALARA principle.
